Style Spotlight: Short Cuts

I get a lot of questions about my hair and it got me thinking…I don’t really talk about hair that much on here. So today I’m going to start by sharing short styles I love.

Short hair isn’t for everyone and can be high maintenance for sure but I feel like everyone should chop their locks for a drastic change at least once. You never know — you may end up loving it!

Here are some of my favorites…

Charlize Theron: I love this look. The soft waves reminiscent of ‘50s Hollywood glamour makes her look classic.

Michelle Williams: Michelle Williams looks amazing with short hair. I remember when I saw her for the first time with her cropped look. It completely transformed her look!

Victoria Beckham: Whether she’s brunette or blonde Victoria Beckham has always had variations of a short super chic hairstyles. I feel like this woman never has a hair out of place.

Katy Perry: Gotta love Katy Perry for her bold looks. In my opinion she’s another person who looks fantastic with short hair and how could you not love her color that changes constantly? She’s fearless.

LA Eats: Pour Vous

Pour Vous is a place I’ve been intending to check out for awhile. I have no idea why I’ve never gone but recently I was reminded that it’s a spot in LA that I’ve overlooked. Pour Vous is known for their craft cocktails and was established by the same owners of Harvard & Stone and La Descarga. If that means absolutely nothing to you take it as a good sign that this place is a spot worth checking out.

Love me a good cocktail. Love me a potential Lohan sighting. Love me a simple website. Me Pour Vous = Match made in heaven!

I love photography who doesn’t? but I’d have to say that portraits are my favorite thing to look at. There’s so much that’s revealed through a close-up of someone’s face. It’s like you can read their life on their face. It’s arresting intimate mysterious and sometimes funny.

Which is why when I came across these amazing portraits by Martin Schoeller I was super stoked. Schoeller’s specialty is portraits and after seeing some of my favorites you’ll understand why he’s recognized for this specific type of work in photography.

I highlighted a place called Wood and Vine way back but wanted to revisit this place once more.

I found this photo on my phone and had to share it — it was definitely one of the more memorable meals I’ve had…but not necessarily for a good reason.

The last time I went there I ordered “Sweet Bread” at dinner. But don’t let the name fool you — it’s actually cow glands…possibly even testicles. GAGS

…but we paid for it. The next day the whole cast literally fell asleep in the fake living room and Jean-Luc went to his character's bedroom and took a nap on the set bed!

Belly Up: Alcove

Joe Jonas first introduced me to Alcove a few years ago when we had some friends visiting from Spain. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite after a sunset hike at Griffith Park or in our case the sweet little house in the back was splendid for seating our big/loud/international group of friends. You order your food at the counter and then a server brings it all to your table which makes splitting the bill much easier. I hate doing math at the dinner table.

It's the sister restaurant to The Aroma Cafe in Studio City so you know it'll have delicious coffee and pastries. The Crab Cake Sandwich is heaven and they have one of the best veggie burgers in town.

Belly Up: El Cid

I love El Cid on Sunset in Silver Lake. I can sit there for hours at brunch. The best!

You walk down the stairs and there’s a big beautiful patio and a dinner style theater with Spanish décor velvet drapery fireplace and colorful bricks and tiles. They have these crazy shows at night with Flamenco dancers and singers bands and stand-up comedy. Great drinks and I believe they have a fine collection of hot sauces to boot!

Random fact: My mom was a Flamenco dancer here back in the day!

This is a music site I absolutely love! If you’re not familiar We Are Hunted is an online music chart that features the top 99 songs online at the moment. It’s a great way to discover new music that you would probably never think of listening to.

Just click on a song or scroll horizontally through the different singles. You can also create playlists and music is organized by genres emerging charts and mainstream charts. It’s a life-changer. Seriously.

Last weekend I was an ambassador at Jane Seymour's Open Hearts Foundation Gala where I wined dined and celebrated some wonderful charities. Guests included Glen Campbell and Kristi Yamaguchi. There was even a silent auction and I took home a 007 poster signed by every actor who has ever played James. A fitting party favor from the bash of a Bond Girl

On all accounts it was an epic evening but one of the stand out moments was musical guest LP who received three standing ovations after her three songs. She's cool and comfortable and plays the electric ukulele. She's got pipes reminiscent of Ann Wilson from Heart and high notes that will have you on your knees. She's floppy hair meets Florence and the Machine and I can't wait to say "I saw her back in the day..."

LP's EP dropped on iTunes yesterday. I'm loving Levitator and I'm sure you guys will recognize the chorus of Into the Wild from that Citi rock climbing commercial that always makes me dizzy. Also how wonderful is that whistling?

Little fact: She wrote Rihanna's "Cheers." I'll drink to that.

A month ago before Coachella madness took over I was in New York where I ate amazing food walked all around Brooklyn danced the night away and saw Nick Jonas’s amazing performance in How To Succeed. Check out the pictures recapping my trip:

For those of you who are making your way to Coachella this weekend there are dos and don’ts to keep in mind. Whether you’ve gone every year or it’s your first time here are some things to remember courtesy of LA Weekly...

DO be ambitious about what artists you’d like to see.

DON’T be bummed if you don’t get to see all of them.

DO designate a meeting place. If you don’t you’ll find yourself stranded alone.

DO watch where you’re walking. People fall asleep on the grass. A lot.

DON’T let photogs take pictures of you looking trashy. They WILL end up on FB Twitter and god knows where else.

Shorts:

One thing you’re definitely going to see a lot of at Coachella are cut-off shorts. I’m a fan of cut-offs that have a little something extra think a little embroidery or some patchwork.

Here’s my favorite pair:

I love to pair these with a sweet little tank and my thumbtack wedges.

When I went to Coachella last weekend I decided not to bring them with me despite being perfect for music festival in the desert. Between spilled drinks sweaty bodies and god knows what else I wasn’t willing to take the risk.

Fabulous Fanny Fridays!

It's the Voldemort of accessories. The he-who-shall-not-be-named of the Potter purse world.

Normally a fanny pack is only seen on a Disneyland tourist or only mentioned when a kid me is begging a parent my dad to take it off but that being said I'm starting to realize that the pack is getting a bad rap. It's not the Dark Lord of fashion I always thought it to be. In fact it's quite comfortable a convenient.

Oh f I'm turning into my father!

I found an awesome little Olsen belt bag from Bed Stü. Enough to hold some cash cards and look super cute.

Rihanna just rocked the Cash Flow Fanny by Joyrich covered on gold dollar signs and before that she looked lovely in a Louis Fanny. Phew!

I'm all about hands free. Hands-free phones hands-free soap dispensers and hands-free raging. I want to be able to clap and fist pump with the best of them and if that means giving into my father's favorite fanny look? Well it could be worse.

Coachella hair is my worst nightmare. Not only are you sharing a shower with everyone and their mom but you're spending the rest of your time in un-cute conditions under the sun. These are the days I dream of having dreads.

Word to your weatherman it's supposed to rain on the first day of Coachella! Unfortunately/fortunately I will be filming on Friday so I won't be hitting the damp desert until Saturday. That being said it still might be a muddy mess of a music festival so let's talk keeping those pedicures pretty shall we?

I'm bringing my Hunters. Every Southern California girl loves to whip out her rain boots since weather is a rare occasion for us. Please God no Glastonbury but how great is this Kate Moss look?

I was first introduced to GT in LT while attempting to ski. Stephen and I had just started dating and he had invited me to join him and his five friends in a cozy cabin for the Christmas holiday.

Colletti ended up getting an early call time back to the Carolina's for some filming and a few hours after he flew out a serious storm hit our slopes and we were snowed in. I ended up bunkering down with the boys for an extended stay complete with beef jerky for breakfast and strong man competitions on constant repeat but the soundtrack to this testosterone fest and billions of beer pong games was always Girl Talk.

Once I was back in warm weather I went to the first GT concert that hit Cali:

A Letter to One Tree Hill

Last night we tuned into One Tree Hill one last time. I remember watching the first episode as a high school freshman fresh off the boat in California. As a homeschooler television was a big part of my teen years seeing as it gave me that thrilling theatrical fix of what I must be missing out on by studying science on my sofa. So I can't begin to tell you how surreal it was to find myself standing on a set with these characters who came into my life so long ago. How a world that I so longed to be lost in was now my playpen complete with tasers tantrums and love triangles all tied up in a tiny little bow named Tara. My time spent working in Wilmington was wonderful and when I wasn't looking for old Dawson's Creek landmarks I made some amazing memories.

I always loved how "Hill" episodes would open with some mind blowing monologue that Mark wrote so as I write this love letter to the friends and fans just imagine I sound super sexy and that "The Sun" is playing in the background.

To Schwahn thank you for making room for me in both of your worlds. It's fitting that you write a show about friendships because you are a friend to everyone you meet.

To Rob my roommate. I will make tater-tots for you any time. I will line up at GameStop play lawn darts and watch endless episodes of "South Park". I will not however ever set my thermostat at 60 degrees ever again.

To James thank you for making me uncomfortable around kittens and still allowing me to be your friend after I made you drink a Smirnoff Ice the first time we ever met. That could have been a deal breaker.

To Bobby and Danielle the owners of our favorite downtown bar. No one else makes a Jameson and Ginger that tastes quite like Calico.

Lee thanks for letting me dance at your wedding. Sophia thanks for the blueberry beer. And Tyler thanks for this picture:

To Stephen I'll Chase you anywhere.

The perfect theme song for a show that was true to itself and stayed on the air for nine years. Congratulations on an amazing run. Most don't make it over the hill.

Blame it on my obsession with Coachella but I can’t wait to see Awolnation!

Blame it on my obsession with Gypsy Fading The art of departing a party at the height of its fun factor without killing the mood by bidding your buddies adieu. Thank you brandnizzle. but I thought it was pretty cool that the name Awolnation is derived from front man Aaron Bruno's high school nickname. Aaron said that he "would leave without saying goodbye because it was just easier so that's where the name Awol came from."

Blame it on my obsession with Styx but check out the band's first single "Sail" which was written with a nod to the song "Come Sail Away" which makes me think of the Ben Foster dance scene in Freaks and Geeks.

LA Eats: Playa on Beverly

My mom came to visit me in Los Angeles a few weeks ago so my cousins and I took her to brunch at Playa on Beverly. It serves the most delicious modern Mexican food. The menu has a lot of tapas style small dishes so don't go hungry. Go there to look good and nibble on a tortilla with real flower pressed into it. I ordered the Maize Cake Salsa Semilla and a Beer & A Ball which is a cocktail made with Campari Aperol grapefruit sage lime and a hops infused champagne. It's a drink that will have me saying "It's 5 o'clock somewhere" all too often.

On Yelp one customer describes Playa as “Trendy and cool...this is a visual sensation of sexy food presentation sexy people and in a sexy & flirty atmosphere. I witnessed beautiful foods strolling by and all kinds of signature drinks. Spectacular.”

I couldn’t say it better myself.

If you’re in Los Angeles you should battle your way to Sunset Boulevard and have a glass of wine at The Mercantile. It’s a cute little wine and cheese bar that also serves dinner and lunch. You can sit outside and talk about life and love over a delicious glass of wine and some tasty cheeses. The chardonnay is yummy and so is the sopressata. They had great tunes too!

What I Like About the Hunger Games

I haven't read the Hunger Games books but regardless I've been thinking about seeing the movie which came out today. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past month and missed the emotionally charged trailer see below you're aware of the hype this movie has been generating.

My Favorite Pubs in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a drinking kind of town. There are a ton of bars and pubs but here are a few that should top your list next time you’re trying to figure out where to go with your girls.

Bar One in North Hollywood – If you’re going to be in the valley you have to hit up Bar One. It’s small but they have a DJ a wide variety of beers to choose from and excellent service. The perfect valley hang.

The Blue Boar Pub in Hollywood – It’s got a pool table and a variety of food you want from an English pub like bangers & mash and fish & chips! Also unisex bathrooms and a game called “Ring the Boar” in the front corner of the bar. So fun you have to play!

Sheddy’s in the Mid-City West area – Cozy little bar with lots of personality lots of wine music and some cool decor. There’s a 3 cover charge can’t beat that with a stick a comedy night Canada Night and a super chill atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Amped On: Allstar Weekend

I got to know Allstar Weekend on what I would call an Allstar Weekend. The up and coming bandmates and I first met on a Disney cruise and we spent a solid 72 hours going overboard on junk food and jet skis.

Introductions:

Zach: the lead singer who loves whisky. With Guy Patterson's charm in That Thing You Do mixed with some Mick Jagger microphone choreography Zach not only invites his female fans onstage to sing but then actually jumps into the pit to help them down.

Cameron: the bass player with Billy Crudup credibility. I can't help but wonder if one of the songs off of AW's All The Way album is an homage to the third member of the tripod. The lyrics depict a buddy whose "sincerity makes them girls go crazy" and I'm pretty sure they only used the title name "James" because nothing rhymes with the obvious choice.

Michael: the strategically placed drummer. If this man had a mic and some room to move it would be a completely different show. I once watched him take over a karaoke stage and summon Michael Jackson as he popped and locked to "Dancing on the Moon" in its entirety for a group of senior citizens who had no idea what hit them.

I can even include my 78-year-old Nana in their plethora of swooning fans. My Nana was my hot date on our Caribbean cruise and they treated her like a princess even when Cinderella was literally at arms length. When I go home for Christmas Nana still insists that I "tell her Allstars" they must stop off at her cabin in Colorado so she can make them a proper supper on tour.

Although I've had nothing to do with their success I can't help but feel like a proud parent when I watch them perform for a packed House of Blues. This band is the perfect definition of good things happening to good people...

...Except for when they got me kicked out of the co-ed spa on the Disney Dream after they started a serious water fight. That was mean and I will have my revenge.

CSI: Behind the Scenes

Hey everyone

In addition to working on “One Tree Hill” I’ll also be appearing on an upcoming episode of “CSI.” Many people don’t know this but one of my guilty pleasures happens to be crime television whether it’s a series like “CSI” or “Law & Order” or investigative news like “Dateline NBC” – I love it all!

I had such a good time working on the show. Everyone was super friendly and my stand-in was pretty awesome as well.

Check out my stand-in who puts Lady Gaga in her place with those SHOES! Pretty amazing.

I Heart Kombucha

One of my favorite things to sip on is Kombucha tea by Snynergy. It’s so refreshing tastes great and is probiotic meaning it contains bacteria that has been shown to help improve digestion and boost immunity.

Many people brew their own Kombucha which includes fermenting tea using yeast but I prefer to pick mine up from the store. Some favorites of mine are the Trilogy the Gingerade and the Guava Goddess. I also love the one with the chia seeds. It's amazing once you get past the slime factor.

Hi everyone

Every year those brits over at BBC nominate musical acts to watch for the coming year and they’re usually on the money. Sure sometimes acts that are very popular abroad don’t always break here in the states but let’s be real: Good music is good music. Thanks to the Internet you can sample music from all over the world – it’s amazing!

While browsing BBC’s latest Sound of 2012 list I immediately fell in love with Lianna La Havas whose voice is so warm and soft. I want to just curl up inside out of her songs and take a vacation. Her musical and vocal style is somewhat understated but extremely charming and familiar. Somehow after listening to a couple songs of her songs I felt like I’ve known Lianna for some time. It’s Mardi Gras which means it’s time to celebrate with cocktails! If you’re of age of course. I’m sad to say I’m not going to be doing anything like heading too over the top for Fat Tuesday but that doesn’t mean I won’t be acknowledging the fact that it’s a day of celebration. Today I’m sharing an awesome recipe using my drink of choice Jameson! that puts a twist on a classic that.

Jameson Whiskey Sour Recipe

Ingredients:

1 ½ ounces of Jameson Irish Whiskey
1 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 ounce of simple syrup
1 ¼ ounces of pureed frozen peaches
Ice
Peach slice for garnish if you’re feeling fancy A cherry and orange slice is usually the norm for this kind of drink.

Just shake all ingredients over ice pour into a glass and you’re all set!

Motley Crue in Concert

Hey everyone!

Last weekend before my live chat on Sunday I went with some friends to Vegas to see Mötley Crüe perform live at the Hard Rock Hotel and it was amazing! When I was watching the Grammys after my live chat last Sunday Taylor Swift’s vintage shabby-chic look for her performance reminded me of this little gem:

My friend Claire Oring who’s a photographer made this dress out of three different lace slips and wore it to her prom. It’s definitely one-of-a-kind and I love how feminine it is. Anyone can stop by the store and pick something off a rack but you’re not going to find something quite as unique as this piece. Top that Andie Walsh.

Amped On: M83

One band I absolutely LOVE is M83 an electropop band from France that makes amazing music. You might know them from their one single “Midnight City” which has been gaining an insane amount of popularity. But honestly it’s just a taste of what their most recent album Hurry Up We’re Dreaming has to offer. This is definitely one album I listen to over and over and it’s nothing short of epic.

That being said I was super pumped when I got tickets to their show a couple of weeks ago in LA. Check out the pictures below:

Loving This Look: Crazy Hair Colors

Hi everyone

Lately I’ve been seeing more girls rocking crazy hair colors which I’m totally digging. Honestly I think it began with the trend of ombre hair where the hair is dark at the roots and gets lighter at the ends before people started using more playful colors to experiment with.

I really like the “dip-dyed” look where color is applied to the tips. It’s fun unexpected and when you get tired of it you can just trim it off.

I’m thinking of getting in on the action and putting a fun color in my hair to mix things up. Maybe pink…what do you guys think?

Hi everyone

How about some mashups for breakfast today? As you know the mashup has become a wildly popular musical style and I’m obsessed. A mashup is basically bringing together the best elements from different songs and creating an entirely new awesome song. Think of it as remix times a million.

If my mashup definition is confusing here are some of my fave Mashups at the moment and you’ll see what I’m talking about:

1. The Jackson Pit by Xaphoon Jones

This is one of my absolute fave mashups featuring "I Want You Back" from the Jackson 5 and "Sleepyhead" by Passion Pit.

2. Pop Culture by Madeon

Madeon Pop Culture mashup came out a while ago Here's the original live mashup in case you haven't seen it! but this video adds a fun visual aspect to the song. There are way too many songs to name in this one but see if you can recognize any:

Aren’t these awesome? I love how mashups can reinvent classic songs with contemporary components – really makes you appreciate them in a whole new way.

LA Eats: Bru Haus

Hi everyone

If you ever need a German fix in LA and it’s not Oktoberfest then I’ve got just the place and it’s called Bru Haus. Bru Haus is located on the westside and is best known for their no frills aesthetic and special attention to German flavors. Whether it’s German beer or German food that you’re after Bru Haus has it all with a modern twist.

They have traditional bratwurst but what really caught my attention were their crazy premium sausages like duck and bacon or alligator and pork Andouille. I wonder what Wurstkuche thinks about the westside competition?

If you’re not feeling adventurous enough then you can always go with one of their burgers or sandwiches and might I suggest a side of a giant Bavarian pretzel. Yup it comes salted with mustard or cheese sauce. If you’re into home-made sauces then you’re in luck because Bru Haus makes their very own beetchup sweet sambal aioli and jalapeno ranch. Rising Star: Alex Winston

Hi everyone

Meet the talented Alex Winston who I haphazardly found on youtube and now I’m hooked on her free spirited charm and catchy songs. Miss Winston is an indie-pop singer from Michigan who was classically trained as an opera singer. She’s released a several tracks and EPs over the past year or so but this video is what caught my attention:

Isn’t that video just to die for? I love the concept of a locomotive music performance and the natural acoustics of their location is amazing. Her voice has an interestingly sweet sound without making her sound young – in fact she exudes a very powerful presence through her vocals.

How to Rock: Sweaters over Collars

A collared shirt is a basic staple of any wardrobe because it is a very versatile piece that can be worn virtually any time of year. For the colder months might I suggest pairing your favorite collared shirt or dress with a sweater. The idea is that depending on the weather you can bundle up or down very easily with this simple formula.

I’m a fan of classic style with modern twists and collars are timeless so you can spice them up by layering with different colors prints and textures. Here are some looks that I created using this trend:

Look 1: Add a sweater over that collared dress of yours and if you need more warmth then go ahead and pair it with tights and scarf. Simple as that.

Hi everyone

Have you ever been to Amoeba Records? Chances are you have if you’re from LA San Francisco or Berkeley as they are musical landmarks in their respective cities. The first Amoeba Records was built in Berkeley CA over two decades ago and that’s where the independently run record store magic started. The San Francisco location followed in 1997 and was voted best record store in the country by the SF chronicle for 5 years running 2000 – 2005.

Where quantity meets quantity.

Next in the fall of 2001 Amoeba Records opened their Los Angeles store in the heart of Hollywood which is the world’s largest independent record store. Sure it’s a pain to find parking and you’ve really gotta dig but this place is such a musical gem. They have a running schedule of free in-store performances by all kinds of artists – yes free.

So if you’re ever in LA and need a place to kill time and explore in Hollywood you should definitely go to Amoeba. I can’t guarantee that you’ll find what you’re looking for but I can assure you that you’ll find something unexpected.

Hooked on a Feeling: Juice

Hi everyone

I want to introduce you to an up and coming LA based band called Juice. Julia Lucafo or “Juice” is the lead singer and songwriter for this rad group of musicians and you’ve just got to give them a listen. If I had to describe their sound I’d say they’re an insanely catchy rock band with a retro twist. Here’s a video of Juice performing their track “Hey Mr.” live at Studio City Sound:

Julia exudes a vintage charm both musically and in person - she's a little flower child with a badass personality. I’ve known Julia for a while and I think the best way to describe her is as a modern day Janis Joplin. It doesn’t get better than that ladies and gentlemen. If you enjoy intimate live shows and a good time then go see Juice perform at the famous Rainbow Room tonight January 17th 10PM.

Hi everyone

I went to Wood & Vine for dinner recently and holy crap! So yummy. Everything on the menu is freshly made from farmer’s market quality ingredients and it has a full bar too. Wood & Vine has a very sophisticated ambiance that has just as much to do with their refined décor as the actual building itself.

Fun Fact: This nifty bar and eatery is located inside the historic 1923 Taft Building which is right across the street from the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

Pro-tip: Whether you’re coming by for brunch dinner or drinks they’ve got you covered with a menu full of treats for everyone. Keep in mind that the menus are different and if you’re coming in a large group a reservation wouldn’t suck.

They have this dessert called the Butterscotch Pot de Crème and it’s served with salted caramel ice cream and it’s crazy good. I think it’s safe to say that it's the best thing I have ever tasted in my life. Seriously you’ve got to try it. Oh yeah and did I mention they have whiskey? Absolutely.

News to Me: LDR on SNL

Hi everyone

Remember when I told you all about the mysterious siren they call Lana Del Rey? Well looks like she’s been quite busy performing accepting awards and making new music since we last checked in on her. In fact it was recently announced that Daniel Radcliffe will make his Saturday Night Live hosting debut on January 14 and guess who will be the musical guest? Yup LDR in NYC on SNL. Haha couldn’t help it.
